British big band that was formed in 1965 by Bill Ashton as the London Schools Jazz Orchestra. Ashton has been with the band constantly since its conception, overseeing a remarkable dynasty of players which has been, since 1974, a fully professional outfit. Despite constant changes in personnel, NYJO has developed its own distinctive sound, from playing almost exclusively tunes that are written and arranged in house by its own members.

Former players include Guy Barker, Mark Nightingale, Gerard Presencer, Dave O'Higgins, Chris Hunter and Phil Todd
