Taking place at 3 p.m. on Memorial Day, Americans are asked to pause for exactly one minute and listen to "Taps" being played on radio and TV stations and remember people who have died in service to their country.

Officially, this moment was called for after a group of children visiting Lafayette Park in Washington, DC answered the question of what Memorial Day was with "That's the day the pools open!"

There have been one-minute moments since 1997, which people who have died in service to the United States seem to have appreciated.

The pools still open on Memorial Day in Lafayette Park.
