In Frank Herbert's Dune a navigator guides the gigantic spaceships called heighliners through fold-space. They depend of their abilities on the spice melange, a drug found only on the planet Arrakis. The navigators live in tanks full of compressed spice gas, and regularly consume great quantities of the drug. This massive addiction to the spice alters their once human shape in a fishlike manner, and gives them limited prescience.

Nav"i*ga`tor (?), n.

One who navigates or sails; esp., one who direct the course of a ship, or one who is skillful in the art of navigation; also, a book which teaches the art of navigation; as, Bowditch's Navigator.
