This is a song from Walt Disney's cartoon version of Peter Pan, which was released in 1953. The lyrics are by J. Lawrence, the music by Frank Churchill.

Never Smile at a Crocodile

Never smile at a crocodile
No, you can't get friendly with a crocodile
Don't be taken in by his welcome grin
He's imagining how well you'd fit within his skin

Never smile at a crocodile
Never dip your hat and stop to talk awhile
Never run, walk away, say good-night, not good-day
Clear the aisle but never smile at Mister Crocodile

You may very well be well bred
Lots of etiquette in your head
But there's always some special case, time or place
To forget etiquette

For instance:
Never smile at a crocodile
No, you can't get friendly with a crocodile
Don't be taken in by his welcome grin
He's imagining how well you'd fit within his skin

Never smile at a crocodile
Never dip your hat and stop to talk awhile
Never run, walk away, say good-night, not good-day
Clear the aisle but never smile at Mister Crocodile

UPDATE 2/27/03
I may as well come clean and explain what led me to node this song.
Basically, my mother used to sing it to me to help me sleep when I was a child. I can still vividly remember my assumption that this (and indeed all songs) were related to real world experiences in a very literal way. In this case, it seemed to me that the song contained some Very Important Advice concerning the correct way to handle crocodiles.
And, you know, perhaps it does.
