The signal code used by the minutemen during the Revolutionary War to signal midnight riders like Paul Revere that the British Army was attacking. Lanterns were held in the belfry of the Old North Church.

According to the famous poem by Longfellow, one lantern was held if the British were approaching over land, and two lanterns if they were approaching from the sea, that is, Boston Harbor.
