Overview of Final Fantasy

This is meant to be a quick ordered replacement to the old Final Fantasy Metanode, but without the opinion pieces and semi-related articles that exist in e2. This is not meant to be an exhaustive list, but the big-picture view of the first 35 years of the franchise

This is a perpetual work-in-progress. Therefore, message me only if you think there's flagrant errors or additions to be made. For a catch-all category within E2, consult the Final Fantasy category.

The world lies shrouded in darkness.
The winds die. The seas rage. The earth decays.
But the people believe in a prophecy,
patiently awaiting its fulfillment.
"When darkness veils the world,
four Warriors of Light shall come."
After a long journey,
four young travelers did at last appear...
...and in the hand of each was clutched a crystal.

3 Recurring characters and themes

3.1 Characters

3.2 Non-human creatures

3.3 Summons

3.4 Equipment and items

4 Other Common themes

4.1 Magic

Grouped by general effect (this database doesn’t really benefit from five small writeups on the Fire family)

4.1.1 General

4.1.2 Individual spells and spell families

4.1.3 Magic Schools and groups

4.1.4 Summons

In general:

4.1.4.1 The Six, Astrals, The Hexatheon

4.1.4.2 Others

4.1.4.3 Ivalice Espers

4.2 Jobs

For simplicity’s sake, this list treats every «job name» as a different entry, even though they may be similar. Otherwise, there could be lots of confusions.

Take for example the first game: in Final Fantasy the third physical job is called Monk in the Japanese release and Black Belt in the NA/EU releases. However, it’s not accurate to say that Monk == Black Belt, because they exist as two separate jobs in Final Fantasy III.

So instead of arguing whether an Uhlan is the same as a Dragoon, this list separates all and leaves the nuances for the brave noders of the future.

4.2.1 «Agent» to «Evoker»

4.2.2 «Fencer»to «Master Monk»

4.2.3 «Medic» to «Scribe»

4.2.4 «Seamstress» to «Wizard»

5 Non-video game media

5.1 Films/TV

5.2 Official albums

(i.e. published by Square/Squaresoft/Square Enix and not fanmade albums)

5.2.1 Official soundtracks

5.2.2 Arrangements and re-releases

(i.e. soundtracks for rereleases of a game)

5.2.3 Compilations

5.2.4 Singles

5.2.5 Concerts

6 Books, novels and manga

  1. The album cover actually has “FINAL FANTASY IX” Original Soundtrack with the double quotes and all-caps, hence the stylization of the album name.

  2. Here too they use «FINAL FANTASY» in all caps, don’t ask me why.

  3. I’m counting this as an official soundtrack because it’s music made specifically for a game, although it’s a game-within-a-game («Justice Monsters V» is a game within «Final Fantasy XV».

  4. Not the same as the above.

  5. Do not confuse with «Sanctuary» the opening track to Kingdom Hearts 2 sung by Utada Hikaru.

  6. I’m putting this under «Arrangements» mostly because they’re not original material made for the game, but still released under the banner of the main game.

  7. Technically a fan-made album but is officially licensed.

  8. If you’re wondering why it’s «Piano Collections FF» first and «FF Piano collections» later, you’re not the only one. Why they didn’t stick to one title format is irritating when cataloguing.

  9. Yes, there’s two Piano Collections for Final Fantasy XI, the latter only exists as part of the Final Fantasy XI Original Soundtrack Premium Box and it’s not the same as the other Piano Collections Final Fantasy XI.

  10. It’s technically a concert, but it makes more sense to group it with the rest of the Bra-Bra series.

  11. Do not mistake with «Yakusoku no Chi» («The Promised Land»), a track in the Advent Children soundtrack. Also, do not mistake with «The Promised Land», an arrangement of the Main Theme of Final Fantasy II featured in Final Fantasy Vocal Collections: Pray.

  12. I’m counting it as a concert even though it’s listed as a «compilation» album because it’s what it is—otherwise most other concerts would be classified as «compilation» which could be a disservice to whoever is using this list.

  13. I’m not counting this under «Distant Worlds» because the idea behind this album is to specifically try to avoid a large orchestra and try to arrange the Final Fantasy music for a small string group.
