What the heck is PIC mode?

A system can run in two different I/O modes: PIC mode and symmetric I/O mode.

PIC mode, or "programmable interrupt controller mode" is the mode in whcih the I/O system runs as "AT compatible." PIC, in this context, refers to the 8259 programmable interrupt controller which handles the prioritization and masking of interrupts.
