Dicentra formosa
A common wildflower found in North America. Hairless. 15-50cm. Brittle rhizomes.
Flowers: pink to purple, heart shaped base, hanging in a cluster from an erect stem.
Leaves: Basal, numerous, fern-like, divided into narrow, oblong segments.
Fruits: pod-like capsules containing several shiny black seeds, with an oil-rich appendage that attracts ants, who lovingly disperse the seeds.
Ecology: Moist forest, ravines, streambanks. Low to middle elevations.
