While the Great Northern's international trains north to Vancouver survived into the Burlington Northern era, the trains were discontinued with the start of Amtrak in 1971.
Within a year, though, Amtrak had revived Seattle-Vancouver service under the name Pacific International, connecting with the Coast Starlight at Seattle for service to Los Angeles.
However, patronage was never very strong, and it didn't help when, in the late 1970s, the southbound Pacific International was extended to Portland, replacing the southbound Mount Rainier, and its schedule was changed so that it didn't connect with the Coast Starlight in that direction only.
That bad scheduling decision was reversed by 1980, but Amtrak discontinued the Pacific International in 1981; service to Vancouver returned in 1994 in the form of the Mount Baker International.
