Parkersburg is the prominent city and county seat of Wood County, West Virginia. It lies just across the Ohio River from Marietta, Ohio and is near Blennerhassett Island. Parkersburg is often blurred with its suburb, Vienna, West Virginia.

Parkersburg was officially named in 1811 in honor of Captain Alexander Parker, the original owner of what was to become the city.

Local newspapers are Marietta A.M. and The Parkersburg News and Sentinel, both owned by Ogden of Wheeling, West Virginia.

Ohio Valley College (now Ohio Valley University) and West Virginia University-Parkersburg are the local colleges.
