Watson was one of the original founders of Greenpeace, in
Vanvouver British Columbia. He left it, in disgust, in 1977, because it was not active enough. He now heads the
US Sea Shepherd organization, a tax-exempt charity. He belongs to the
Direct Action school of
environmental protest, meaning that he performs illegal actions which some consider
ecoterrorism. For example, he is wanted by the
Norwegian government for an attack on the Whaling vessel Senet, in which he employed ex-Navy
SEAL operatives.
