A Greek city in Mysia (now Turkey) which became famous during the Hellenistic period. Its kings, the Attalids, conquered a large territory in north-west Asia Minor and incorporated it into their kingdom. Pergamum was a major center of Hellenic learning and culture during the Hellenistic and Roman periods. The great doctor Galen was born here.
