A type of flooring that attempts to
mimic the
style of
hardwood floors.
This material generally is composed of a hard inner core of compressed wood particles, covered with several layers of tightly pressed laminate, and coated with a resilient layer that resists wear.
The generic name for this material is 'Laminate Flooring' or 'Floating Floor'. The latter name is derived from the method of installation where the floor is not attached directly to the sub-floor, but 'floats' overtop; the individual 7' X 4" boards held together by glue or a snapping mechanism.
'Pergo' itself a brand name that came into common use, much like 'Kleenex' or 'Band Aid'.
This flooring system is a big favorite with do-it-yourselfer's as the material is inexpensive, and installation is simple.
