Pete Tong & Paul van Dyk - Essential Mix Live at the Gallery Turnmills in London, UK

The Essential Mix is a live radio performance put on by a BBC radio station, Radio 1. It can be listened to live on the airwaves and online at www.bbc.co.uk/radio1, and is put on by Pete Tong. Typically, the Essential Mix has featured well known house, funk, trance, and goa DJs, such as Paul van Dyk, Seb Fontaine, Mauro Picotto, Paul Oakenfold, Carl Cox, Sasha, John Digweed, and Judge Jules. For the most part, Pete Tong is only the announcer for the Essential Mix, but has occasionally taken to the tables to spin a set. I've had the great fortune of being a listener of the Essential Mixes for some time and have recently been treated to a two hour set by Pete Tong and Paul van Dyk.

The first set is spun by Pete Tong and has a touch of house added to funk. The set is an hour long and includes:

History Of Disco - Love Tattoo
Boogie Monster - Armand Van Helden
Antione Clamaran/Disco Ep - Do The Funk
Harry Choo Choo Romero - Hazin' & Phazin
Harry Choo Choo Romero - Just Can't Get Enuff
Bob Sinclair - The Ghetto
Victor Imbres/Chris Smith - Bass Funk
Mauro Picotto - Lizard
Mario Piu - Unicorn
Orgy - Blue Monday
Shake Your Head - Funky 4 Dinner
DJ Dan - Needle Damage

Bass Funk is solid mix of house and funk and is very similar to Boogie Monster by Armand Van Helden. The background of the performance is littered with cheering from the crowd, and is peppered by Pete himself yelling to the crowd.

The second set is by Paul van Dyk and is more a set of melodic trance, as per van Dyk's style. The set is also an hour long and consists of:

HH - Ice Ep
Z2 - I Want You
Plet Blank & Jaspa Jones - Cream
Paul Van Dyk - For An Angel
Me - Ga
Slick Mick - Middle
Southside Spinners - Luvstruck
2 Digital - Because Of My Dreams
DJ Tiesto & Ferry Corsten - Gouryella
2 Digital - Because Of My Dreams
The Riddle (Top Secret) - Hush Hush
Floorplay - One More Time
Hatious - Amber

which includes one of my favorite songs, Gouryella, in a mix by one of my favorite DJs, DJ Tiesto. This performance has several interjections by Pete Tong announcing that it is a Radio 1 Essential Mix, but van Dyk himself doesn't speak. It has a feel more similar to that of a studio performance

A mixed compilation of progressive dance, trance, and hi-NRG tunes, put together by two of the worlds best DJs. Live broadcasts are known, e.g. for the BBC, but they are best heard live on the dancefloor

I personally heard these two DJs in a DJ battle @ Home Nightclub in Sydney, Australia. They were AMAZING! Everyone was in such a good mood, the music was pumping, the light show was awesome, and there was an amazing vibe throughout the whole club.

One of their mix sets is also available (in Australia) through DanceNet and Ministry of Sound at Central Station Records. A must - a 2 CD Set with two of the best DJs playing some of their best sets.
