THE baseball
guru. He knows more about
baseball that almost anyone, and analyzes the game from all angles. He used to write a full-page column for the
Boston Globe that was nationally syndicated, but now he writes said column for
ESPN.com, in addition to being one of their on-air personalities and a co-host for
Baseball Tonight.
A 1969 graduate of the University of North Carolina, Gammons started his career as a reporter for the Globe, before becoming a writer for Sports Illustrated. After another stint at the Globe, he returned to SI as a senior sportswriter, picking up three Sportswriter Of The Year Awards (1989, 1990, and 1993). He has also authored a book about free agency in baseball entitled "Beyond The Sixth Game".
A fan of the alternative rock scene who used to be seen at various clubs in Boston (before moving to Bristol), the then 55-year-old Gammons played Susan Sarandon in the ESPN commercial that spoofed Bull Durham. He also bears a striking resemblance to the guy on the new U.S. twenty dollar bill, and personally autographs the hundred or so bills sent to him in the mail each month.
