A German musical ambassador, a travelin' man, one of the first wave of European free jazzers, as bassist in the Peter Brotzmann Trio and Globe Unity. Part of a great 80s trio with Creative Construction Company alum Leo Smith and DDR drumanarchist Günter "Baby" Sommer. He has done a lot of dance music (not as in "shake your booty") and solo concerts that don't make you miss the "rest of the band" - if you can get into the outer reaches of Hendrix or Belew, Kowald shouldn't seem alien.
