1935- American satirist, Composer, musician and author
I first heard PDQ Bach on the radio years ago and for me it was side splitting funny. The name of the radio program is Schickele Mix. He is recognized as one of the most versatile artists in the field of music. He founded the New Horizons in Music Appreciation during which his well-known other role as perpetrator of the oeuvre of the now-classic P.D.Q. Bach, Schickele is acknowledged as one of the great satirists of the 20th century. He received 4 Grammy Awards
He was born in Ames, Iowa, and brought up in Washington, D.C. and Fargo, North Dakota. When his family moved to DC, he was exposed to the satirical Jazz of Spike Jones. He did his undergraduate work at Swarthmore. A graduate of the Juilliard School of Music, which he attended during the same time as Philip Glass. He developed the concept of P.D.Q. Bach in 1953 while working with an early tape recorder. He went back briefly to teach at Julliard before becoming an independent soloist that he is today. He plays the piano and Bassoon.
Works:
He was undoubtely inspired in part by Victor Borge who also delighted classical music audiences with humor and satire. He also invented the AMAZING instrument, the tromboon.
