Flemish painter born c
1525, called "The Elder" to distinquish him from his two sons, Pieter the Younger and Jan. Influenced by
Hieronymus Bosch, Bruegel is known for his landscapes with sturdy peasants, often filled with
frenetic activity. His best known work is perhaps the "
Peasant Wedding" famous among undergraduate art history students as "the one with the extra foot." and for a "
Tower of Babel" that has adorned many a dorm room wall and book jacket. He also painted "
The Blind Leading the Blind" which, like many of his paintings, has
allegorical significance. My own personal favorite, for reasons shown on
another node, is the "
Fall of Icarus." Also known for "
The Triumph of Death."
