Michele Ghisleri

Became Pope in 1566 and died in 1572. A Dominican and previously an inquisitor in Northern Italy. Hated heretics and had become inquisitor general in 1558. Austere and a strict disciplinarian. One of the best reforming Popes.

Forbade any preaching on indulgences. Reduced the size and cost of the Papal court and encouraged strict observations to holy days.

Commission to investigate all appointments, 1567.

Revised Roman breviary (1568), missal (1569) and bible (1570).

Ensured that the decrees of the Council of Trent were obeyed. Excommunicated Queen Elizabeth I of England but had mixed relations with Philip II of Spain.
