Plant Bowen, owned by Georgia Power (a wholly-owned subsidiary of Southern Company) and located in scenic Cartersville, Georgia, is the world's fourth largest coal-firing power plant. At first glance, you might think that Plant Bowen is nuclear. The massive cooling towers have fooled many an onlooker, but the smokestacks give away the fact that it is, indeed, a coal plant. And what a coal plant it is. Plant Bowen produces as much as 3,160 megawatts of juice and consumes a staggering 8,700,000 tons of coal each year. Coal is shipped directly to the plant by rail, courtesy of CTX.
