Once upon a time, I saw someone write this on Usenet. It sums up my thoughts on this subject:
Plug and play is the worst possible means of configuring devices. I'd much rather have jumpers or DIP switches. I'd rather solder or wire wrap connections myself. Do not buy PnP devices unless you want to torture yourself.
