One proper name used for the leaders of a fraternal orders. Sometimes the hierarchical notation of "Grand" or "Grand Imperial" is prepended to the term "poobah" to denote a higher level of importance to the holder of the poobah title.

This term is frequently used in a satirical sense. Good examples of this include the cartoon series "The Flintstones" and the Loyal Order of the Buffalo in the series which many say represented a satire of the B.P.O.E (Benevolent and Protective Order of the Elks)and Camp Gumby with their Grand Imperial Poobah satirizing this type of leader and their tendency to wear odd head-ware.
