(NetHack)

A potion is a flask, bottle, or phial of liquid with magical properties, or occasionally some other liquid (such as acid or booze). Quaffing a potion bestows the full effects upon the quaffer. Some potions can be thrown at other creatures in order to affect them instead. Even if you miss, the vapors created (most potions are alcohol-based) sometimes affect those in the vincinity.

Certain potions can be dipped in other potions to create various effects and/or new potions. Dipping a potion into water will dilute it; a second dip will change it to water. Dipping a unicorn horn into a potion also changes it to water.

As of version 3.3.0, potion types include:

Po"tion (?), n. [L. potio, from potare to drink: cf. F. potion. See Poison.]

A draught; a dose; usually, a draught or dose of a liquid medicine.
