IOT – Initial Officer Training

Aim – To develop leadership potential, provide foundations of skills, attitude and knowledge required by junior officers in the Royal Air Force.

Length – 24-week intensive training course with 3 main phases. Due to be edited to a 30-week course of 10 week blocks with one week interval between phases in November 2005.

Where – (Royal Air Force College) RAFC Cranwell, Lincolnshire. This is also where you will come to the OASC (Officer and Aircrew Selection Centre).

Phase 1 – BASIC PHASE

This is an introduction to the Royal Air Force life, it covers the basic military skills required for cadets to be effective as junior officers.

Phase 2 – FOUNDATION PHASE

This phase concentrates mainly on developing leadership – early leadership training classroom exercises

MOVE INTO COLLEGE HALL MESS

Field Leadership Camp (FLC) – Tests all the leadership and management abilities that have been learnt in the classroom in practical situations. Here you will be asked to carry out certain missions all of which you will receive a mission briefing. Some missions you will be the leader of a squad, other missions other people will be the leaders, but you will always have responsibility within your squad.

MID – COURSE REVIEW – Each cadets progress is reviewed at this stage and some will be continued onto the next phase, some cadets will be backtracked to an earlier stage in the training to repeat part or all of the course.

Phase 3 – APPLICATION PHASE

This phase teaches the cadets the theory and academic studies that cadets need during their careers, teaching cadets skills such as service writing, which is how the RAF communicates on paper.

We also take a look at operational studies which is how the RAF goes about doing its business as a military force.

Drill Continues…

CAROUSEL – A three week cycle of adventurous activities and work experience, designed to further develop and test what cadets have learnt so far.

Adventure training tests and develops COURAGE, ENTHUSIASM, DETERMINATION, and in some cases TRUST.

Station Management Simulator – Allows cadets to operate as a junior officer on a base and work with other officers. It tests their ability to perform as junior officers in a purely simulated environment.

IOT will change as of November 2005. It will be extended to a 30 week course and will incorporate the following:

TERM 2 Week 11: Fairbourne Week 12-Week 15: Academics-Op studies, Oral Comms, Essential Service Knowledge, Staff Studies, Written Comms, Leadership (Transactional) Week 16: Ex Planning Week 17-Week 18: Ex-Force Protection Week 19: Academic Exams Week 20: Grad Support Recommend Graduation and leave
