A Ransom Rest is a vice like stand used for test-firing guns. It is useful if you are adjusting your scope or testing the accuracy and repeatability of a gun. The idea is that it holds the gun, absorbs the recoil and then returns the gun to it's exact original position so you can fire several rounds in a row and see where they hit on a fixed target to test the consistancy and accuracy of the weapon.
