You prick your finger on a
rose thorn. You get a red bump. It doesn't go away. Ever. Eventually, the
infection can (rarely) reach your brain and you may even die.
Yeah, right, that's not going to happen. Right?
Sporotrichosis is an infection caused by a fungus called Sporothrix schenckii which is found in garden vegetation. You often catch it off of pricks from rose thorns and other plants and barbed wire. I caught mine in my ankle standing in a garden compost heap- I had to have it surgically removed- (fortunately the infection, not the ankle!)
There is an antibiotic treatment (itraconazole) that can cure it.
