German philologist and indologist (specialist in Indian language, culture and history). Born 1821, died 1895. Professor at Tübingen from 1848; granted a peerage in 1873.

With his work Zur Literatur und Geschichte des Weda (1846), von Roth more or less founded the methodical study of the Vedas. Together with O. von Böhtlingk, he published the largest Sanskrit dictionary to date (seven volumes, 1852-1875).
