Country in Africa which borders the Democratic Republic of the Congo, Uganda, Tanzania, and Burundi. Much known for its ethnic conflict between Tutsi and Hutu; the Tutsi are the minority who were favored by Germany and Belgium, both of whom held the area as a colony at some point. The Hutu are the majority, who overthrew the Tutsi monarch in 1959. Children of exiled Tutsi came back in 1990 and started a civil war; in April 1994 this had esclated into genocide. Approximately 800,000 Tutsis and moderate Hutus were killed. The Tutsi rebels defeated the Hutu regime and ended the genocide in July 1994, but approximately 2 million Hutu refugees fled to surrounding countries. According to the UN, by early 1997 nearly 1.3 million Hutus had returned to Rwanda.
