A subgenre of science fiction that deals with traditional science fiction themes, settings, and ideas with a cool, dark tone similar to that of film noir. Most initial works, like Glass Houses and Gun, with Occasional Music, were written in the early '90s; tendrils stretch back further, however, to writers like Phillip K. Dick, whose short stories Do Androids Dream of Electric Sheep and Minority Report were made into science fiction film noirs (Blade Runner and Minority Report, respectively).
