Know all things to be like this:
A mirage, a cloud castle,
A dream, an apparition,
Without essence, but with qualities that can be seen.

Know all things to be like this:
As the moon in a bright sky
In some clear lake reflected,
Though to that lake the moon has never moved.

Know all things to be like this:
As an echo that derives
From music, sounds and weeping,
Yet in that echo is no melody.

Know all things to be like this:
As a magician makes illusions,
Of horses, oxen, carts, and other things,
Nothing is as it appears.

"Ancient Futures: Learning from Ladakh"

Of course, this is but a fragment of the text, that I learnt at school. The complete text is a Mahayana sutra. In the sutra, Buddha Shakyamuni (Gautama Siddhartha) prophesies the coming of Gampopa, among others, and more importantly of the Karmapa lamas, the first line of incarnate lamas in Tibet.

The Karmapa ("Activity of all Buddhas") is the head of the Karma-Kagyu lineage of tibetan buddhism, and like the Dalai Lama is regarded as an incarnation of Availokiteshvara (Chenrezig). The present Karmapa, Urgyen Trinley Dorje, is the 17th, and was born in 1985 in Tibet, and fled to India in late December 1999.
