In the 1700s and 1800s, Scarborough, England was a town where criminals or even suspected criminals were often hanged without trial, by mobs, often with local constabulary support. They would be routed out of taverns, or their homes, and brought to a tree to hang. Consequently, a Scarborough warning is no warning at all.
