The Schutzstaffel, often abbreviated SS, was a wide-spread paramilitary organization under Adolf Hitler and the Nazi Party in Nazi Germany which played a significant role during World War II. While the name literally translates as 'Protection Squadron', they were the group charged with the security and surveillance of the expanding German state, and ran the Gestapo and the concentration camps, among many other programs.
