As with many other facets of everyday life, Scottish newspapers are quite distinct from the main newspapers found in England and the rest of the UK. Many of the Scottish papers have a long and distinguished history, and a brief description of each one is given.

The Herald, formerly the Glasgow Herald - established in 1783, it claims to be “one of the oldest English language daily newspapers in the world”. It has a fairly balanced political outlook, with an occasional glance towards Scottish independence.

The Press and Journal – Aberdeen-based paper, “Britain's oldest daily newspaper, and the world's third-oldest English-language newspaper - dating back to 1746.”
