Of Men and Wives
a sonnet

Without reserve, respect, or self control,
The brothers go to find some wives in town.
Lacking experience, like a new foal,
Each one will catch a wife, despite her frown.

Despite her cry of fear and thrashing arms,
Each girl is torn away from place of birth.
From cities wherein almost no one farms,
To fields, and homes where they must clean the hearth.

What men are these that can't respect a bride?
A creature of such beauty and such grace.
And each of them, they see just one more hide.
Each one should be ashamed to show his face.

And yet after a winter in the wild,
Each girl becomes submitted, meek, and mild.
