Yet another attempt at a productive fusion reactor, although this one is funded by the Department of Energy.
Shiva uses a large hollow steel sphere filled with a liquid medium of some sort. Nine quarter-mile long lasers are positioned equidistantly on various axes around the sphere, and all are aimed at a precise point in the center. When the lasers are fired, a pellet containing deuterium is dropped into the focus of the lasers. It then fuses and heats the liquid medium and yadda yadda yadda you get the idea.
Unfortunately, it has yet to produce an appreciable amount of energy beyond that needed to power the lasers, and is thus not productive.
