An effective (though potentially insidious) form of social control. It can be practiced formally (e.g., excommunication or interdiction) or informally.

It can an extremely powerful tactic for usenet newsgroups that are infested by a troll. If the regulars of the group simply stop replying to or mentioning the troll, he/she may lose interest and drift away.
