Program started after World War II and developed furter by Dwight D. Eisenhower in 1956. The program is managed by the non-profit organization Sister Cities International, and its aim is to build people-to-people relations between citizens of U.S. cities and and citizens of cities elsewhere in the world, thus lessening the danger of future conflicts.

1,200 U.S. communities are at the moment paired with 2,100 partners in 127 nations.
