A Canadian bookstore chain.
Originally an offshoot of the British bookselling chain W H Smith, the company became independent, and changed its name to SmithBooks, in the late 1980's.
In 1995, the then CEO of SmithBooks, Larry Stevenson, succeeded in merging the chain with Coles, which were then the two largest bookselling chains in Canada, to form Chapters Inc. The company kept the smaller-format Coles and SmithBooks stores running, and began opening large-format Chapters book "superstores".
