Sobering up before heading off to bed is often one of the nicest parts of an evening, and I dont just mean if you're doing this sobering up with a
partner.
Because of the driving laws here in Australia, and specifically in Victoria, At a party where alcohol is going to be consumed, usually the host offers a couch or spare bed for any of those in need.
So when the majority of the guests go home, there is the core group of friends left at the host's home, sitting around, drinking water, raiding the fridge for leftovers and generally relaxing.
Everyone seems to calm down, become more personal and let slip the masks that people often wear when meeting new people.
This sobering up process is good for both the individual and the group, and the amusing conversations that occur this late in the evening quite often cement the party as one of those social events by which others are judged.
