socket created by
Intel for its shortlived
Pentium Pro processors. The problem with Socket 8 processors was not performance, but cost; integrating the
cache and
processor dies in the same
PGA carrier
doubled the
probability of
failure.
Slot 1 is actually very similar to Socket 8 in design, only the physical form factor is a slot rather than a socket.
