Soda fountains have been around since the early part of the century, often in small-town drugstores with brands such as Rexall, or malt shops. With the advent of soft-serve ice cream and other uber-processed food, the soda fountain has died out in recent times, except in small towns as sung about in Moe Bandy's "Americana". The operator of a soda fountain is called a soda jerk.
