This is the name given to the
amplification of
sound for a
concert,
play, or other kind of
show. Normally, a
sound engineer will use a number of
microphones, and
speakers to increase the
volume of the
actors or
musicians on
stage.
Sound reinforcement can be used for a
play in a large hall, where the
acoustics may not be overly good, and therefore sound reinforcement is needed so that all the
audience can hear what is going on. In this situation, the idea is for people to be able to hear what is being said, but not notice that sound reinforcement is being used.
At the other end of the scale is
amplification for a
concert, where the idea seems to be to turn the
music up as
loud as it can go, and see how many people you can
deafen!
