A Broadway musical by Richard Rogers and Oscar Hammerstein II, based on the novel Tales of the South Pacific by James Michener. Opened at the Majestic Theatre in 1949. It is set on a tropical island in the middle of WWII, and revolves around a pair of romances between people of very different backgrounds - an American soldier and his Polynesian girlfriend, and an American army nurse with a French farmer. The film version, starring Mitzi Gaynor and Rosanno Brazzi, won the 1958 Academy Award for Best Sound. The musical numbers are:
