A protestant denomination originally formed around the concepts of separation between church and state and the priesthood of the believer dependent on each believer acting on his or her own reading of the Bible as the Word of God. Split in the early 1800s from the American Baptist denomination over the issue of slavery.
The Convention suffered a Conservative coup in the 1970s from which it has not recovered.
