An aquarium filter, similar in concept to an under gravel filter, which is best suited for a small aquarium in which an under gravel filter is not suitable (usually the case in aquariums which don't have a filter plate for a UGF).

The sponge filter works by sucking water through a sponge. The sponge becomes the home for the bacteria which drive the nitrogen cycle in an aquarium.

Sponge filters can be powered by an uplift tube with air supplied by an air pump, or can be powered by an electric impeller. You can also put a sponge on the intake of a power head or power filter, or put a mass sponge inside the media chamber of a power filter, canister filter, internal filter, or wet-dry filter.
