Steens Mountain is a huge uplifted fault block located in southeastern Oregon. It rises more than a mile from the surrounding desert and contains several deep gorges.

These gorges are U-shaped, having been created by glaciers during the last ice age. They drop almost straight down over 3000 feet and are very dramatic.

To the east of the mountain lies the Alvord Desert, a seven mile wide playa of alkali flats and sagebrush. Hot Springs, both swimmable and non, exist on this desert, and brightly colored borax lakes are to be found scattered across it's surface.
