(1901-1989) Harvard educated, taught at Howard University. Brown was a poet and an integral part of the Harlem Renaissance. Brown is known for his frank, unsentimental portraits of black people and their experiences, and the incorporation of African-American folklore and contemporary idiom into his verse. He published two books of poetry: Southern Road, and The Last Ride of Wild Bill.
