Guitarist, studio engineer, and general beacon of creativity and intelligence in the musical wasteland. Though he's best known for his work recording Nirvana and the Pixies, he was a member of the classic post-punk group Big Black and is currently in Shellac, both of which are incredibly great bands.

Also was featured in Rapeman. His production technique is typified by abrasive guitars, mid-range punch and clanky percussion. It "shows a negative of a band, highlighting both their negative and positive assets." While this can be helpful (The Pixies, The Auteurs), it can often show how awful a band is (Bush), or just obscure the songs themselves (PJ Harvey). One of his less carefully thought out activities was his constant lambasting of Liz Phair. According to Kurt Cobain, "really into lighting his ass on fire."
