Dorothy L. Sayers's 1930 detective novel, in which Peter Wimsey meets his destiny, Harriet Vane. Wimsey first sees her in a courtroom, where she's on trial for her lover’s murder. The plot moves swiftly through a melange of lawyers' offices, publishing houses, domestic kitchens, genteel cafes, parties where arty types mingle, and faked seances, as Wimsey gathers evidence to prove Harriet's innocence. As always, the strength of the novel lies in Sayers’ lively dialogue, characters, and wit.
