This album broke new ground for the Beach Boys in several ways - it was the first album made by Brian Wilson while the rest of the band were away on tour, with the band only adding their vocals later; it was the first album where they used 8-track recording on some tracks, and it was the first album to feature new member Bruce Johnston, who had joined the band as Brian's touring replacement. He didn't feature on the cover though, and wouldn't until 1967's Wild Honey album. (Al Jardine isn't on the cover either - he missed the photo shoot through illness).
Musically, though, the album is treading water slightly. There are a number of excellent tracks, but also more than a couple that simply repeat the summer fun formulae of the past.
